Christopher Wilcox speaks to Gilt & Folly about Natural Curiosities


1. What is Natural Curiosities and who is Christopher Wilcox?

Natural Curiosities is an Art House based in Los Angeles. Their Studio is housed in a 1924 converted bowling alley on the Sunset Boulevard with a team of 18; a collection of artists, artisans, curators, collectors and designers. Natural Curiosities seeks to make art that is approachable by creating affordable, cherished and collectible pieces. Last year, Natural Curiosities supplied handmade pieces to more than 800 leading designers, premium lifestyle retailers and boutique stores across the USA and around the world. Christopher Wilcox is an artist, designer and entrepreneur who moved to California from England ten years ago. He is the owner and founder of Natural Curiosities.



2. What makes you different from other artists / art houses?

Natural Curiosities is a creatively-led business nurtured by the love and loyalty of an incredibly dynamic group of clients, both old and new. These individuals believe in the journey, and they have become loyal supporters of a belief that art is not a decorative accessory, but an essential part of design and, in Natural Curiosities case, artwork full of soul made by people who love what they do. Christopher Wilcox is acknowledged as an innovator by the US design community. He has created bespoke Collections for customers like Baker Furniture who are renowned their commitment to both the eye and the hand of great design. Natural Curiosities also provides artwork for movie and TV sets that has featured in hits like the Twilight Saga and House. Christopher has a growing reputation amongst a very select group of clients in Beverley Hills and the Hollywood Hills where he lives.

3. How do you think Natural Curiosities will fit into the Singapore Art scene compared to established artists from Europe who have made their name around the world before?

Christopher Wilcox is profoundly influenced by European and Asian Culture, and has successfully built Natural Curiosities alongside the Fine Art establishment in the USA. He celebrates Singapore’s drive to become South East Asia’s cultural and design hub - home to so many of the region’s most influential taste makers and is excited and energized to be introducing Natural Curiosities.

4. How do you think your aesthetics will be received by Asian collectors?

Art and history are partners in many of Natural Curiosities Collections, with an aesthetic that has been described as modern antiquarian. They create artwork with deep historical and cultural references that brings colour, sophistication, understated elegance and a well travelled wit to contemporary, casual and traditional interiors. These combined attributes are rare and they make Natural Curiosities artwork very desirable and collectible.

5. Why are your pieces not on limited releases?

Natural Curiosities creates artwork made-to-order by hand in their Los Angeles Studio, and they also provide a bespoke level of service. This offers a customized alternative to the limited-edition model where Natural Curiosities often creates special pieces that are actually often sold in even smaller quantities. This approach creates a new level of accessibility to "one-of-a-kind" artwork that many people desire, but few can afford.

6. Why do you allow your art pieces to be reproduced at the prices you hope to command?

Natural Curiosities strictly manages the supply of artwork to support premium pricing, and they create four new Collections every year. Christopher Wilcox believes that everyone should be able to aspire to own a piece of art that they love and cherish.
