TOI small table
Salvatore Indriolo
"It's a timeless element that, thanks to an unseen mechanism, has a rotating top which reveals a spacious organizer compartment below, perfect for all those small objects that are part of our home lives. The decentralized rotating hub is the real pivot of a project that comprises the double functions of table top and discreet organizer."

PARTY sofa
Gabriele Rosa
"Many people nowadays seem to be living more than one life at a time. They have the capacity to change rapidly while remaining themselves. In the arc of a day they quite naturally pass from one situation, moment or context to another completely different one. These versatile, changeable and eclectic people have new attitudes and ways of being, that follow new ways of living. The sofa embodies the hub of domestic life; it becomes the place where multiple activities happen, each one with its own specific modes; a stage that is animated by many different characters. Party translates this change, not only adapting to contemporary living, but effectively recounting something about our present as well."

ALTOPIANO sofa
Ludovica + Roberto Palomba
"We've created a system of full and empty spaces, using the different depths to create a feeling of extended surfaces, where the different elements are like suspended planes in respect to the floor. At the basis of this project there is a study of material and research into textiles. For the final choice we were inspired by canvases, woven cottons and coarse fabrics."

31 Oct 2011

Designer: Achille Castiglioni

Design year: 1940

Production year: 1968

Typology: trestle worktable

Structure: naturally evaporated beech wood

Top: plated in white laminate or tempered plate glass
Plus: adjustable height
Measurements: trestle 51x86cm; h.63/89cm; top 100x200cm

Museums: Victoria&Albert Museum, London; Museo dell’arredo contemporaneo, Russi (RA); Thessaloniki Design Museum, Saloniki

History:
Developed from the type of worktable that is timeless, and was much loved by Achille Castiglioni who wanted to create one for his studio in Piazza Castello in Milan. With Zanotta, Achille Castiglioni perfected a calibrated version of the table for industrial design use, highly accurate both in shape detail and finish. Leonardo is one of Zanotta’s historical products that has become an established international reference piece.

Values:
Leonardo represents the first industrial re-elaboration of the classic artist’s trestle table, and has had enormous success amongst professionals and industrial employees. It’s adjustable thanks to two simple wooden pegs, which create five different heights from 65cm to 91cm; the trestle legs are composed of 6 elements in evaporated beech wood, assembled to form a small piece of domestic architecture; the top, ample and resistant, is in tempered plate glass or plywood covered with white laminate plastic, two rubber supports stabilize the trestles.

Born in Turin in 1905, he received his degree in architecture in 1931 and his career was highly diversified, covering architecture, design, interior decorating and town planning.

Among these, he designed a wide variety of furniture of all types: he even invented new kinds of furniture. But he also created planes and cars.

In addition to this fervid designing, he loved photography, stunt flying and car racing and was an expert in all these fields. He even got some ideas and technology from racing which turned him in good stead in his designing.

His production made him one of the symbols of the entire 1950s; one of his major built works is the Turin University School of Architecture, where he held the chair of Architectural Composition and Decorating from 1952 to 1970.

He died in Turin in 1973.
