Award-winning designer Barbara Barry is internationally known for her streamlined interiors and elegant home furnishings. Her look speaks to quiet luxury, comfort and ease – supporting her design philosophy that living simply and with quality is the highest form of luxury.

Gail Doby: Why were you compelled to write "Around Beauty"?

Barbara Barry: In looking back over my career I realized I had a core philosophy and a way of looking at the world that I wanted to share. I wanted to write something that would share ideas and process, rather than opine on design, and hopefully inspire.

Gail: Why is beauty so integral to your life?

Barbara: Because it is the starting point, the thing that gets my motor running; the aim and the goal of everything I do.

Gail: How do you define good design?

Barbara: I define good design as simple and human scaled. If you have these two elements you will generally have a good design.

We all have our favorite things. For some it's the tangible pair of little earrings or sky-high Louboutins. For others it's the intangible gentle smell of salted summer breeze or biting cold of the dry winter wind.

Los Angeles designer Barbara Barry shares her list of favorite home products, from Augarten dishes to Häagen-Dazs ice cream!

The visionary words of designer Barbara Barry:

Call me a dreamer, but I would like to believe that over the next 25 years we will all continue to grow as human beings and come to a place of understanding that our choices affect everyone. Perhaps we'll reach a collective understanding that the world is a fragile place and that it takes a higher level of care than we currently give it.

I see us moving beyond the mere material and toward the restorative, a move that brings us to a way of living that is not all about "stuff" or "style" but about shelter and nurture.

I have a great hope that there will be better low-income housing, so that everyone — those with little and those with much — can come home to calm, nurturing, restorative havens. Why should only the wealthy get the opportunity to have what all of us need?

I imagine the collective consciousness being raised aesthetically, so that we begin building homes with materials that last: stone basements and walls, solid wood floors — materials that endure beyond us.

And finally, I envision more people experiencing the feeling of how something done well feeds our soul. That, in turn, brings us to the realization that we need less. And that leads to an appreciation of the beauty in simple things — things that exist freely in our world like lemons growing on a tree, air that is fresh and the color of the sky.

Poltrona Frau - Regina II
Designed by Paolo Rizzatto, the Regina II is an ultra-contemporary interpretation of the classic bergère. The seat and the backrest are upholstered in Pelle Frau® leather. The capitonné effect workmanship enlivens the surface, creating a delicate play of spaces and solids. The padding is in polyurethane foam and Dacron® and the base is in painted steel. Regina II comes with an elegant pouf.

Barbara Barry - Grace Lounge Chair
Designed by Barbara Barry, this piece of armchair is an elegant expression of home as a serene retreat; a place where light, space, timeless forms and muted tones unite to create a quiet, calm, fresh and uncluttered interior.

Barbara Barry HEARTS Peranakan

26 Nov 2010

We took some time out for Barbara to experience local culture and cuisine in Singapore and she was immediately taken aback by the unique colour, flavour and style of Peranakan culture. Ayam Buah Keluak, Udang Asam and Nangka Lemak were some of Barbara’s favorite dishes amongst the unique Peranakan feast she had at the TRUE BLUE restaurant along Armenian Street, just next to the Peranakan Museum.

After what we know now, we’re all speculating that Barbara might actually have some of that famous Peranakan woman “passion” in her blood! Which I guess might explain her immediate affinity to the food.

24 Nov 2010

A year after we opened our Barbara Barry Gallery at ION, we finally managed to squeeze some time out of Barbara’s busy schedule to get her down to Singapore for a visit. Little did we know what great experiences were in store for all of us!

The world just seems like a brighter, more colourful place with her in it. When Barbara walks through a room, it’s like she’s brought the bright lights of Hollywood along with her and you’re just tagging along for the ride.

Needless to say, our week with her went by far too quickly. It was a whirlwind of excitement, parties and education in design and living a well lived life.

In between all that excitement, we managed to take a few photos (Ok, maybe more than just a few...), but even without them, I’m sure no one who was with us will soon forget how Barbara has touched all our lives.

Passion for beauty has been the driving force behind my discipline. This force has been with me since childhood. I have always wanted to make things better, and if I am driven, it is for a good life, not for material possessions. If I had nothing, I would still be drawing and designing; striving to improve my surroundings.” – Barbara Barry
