15 Dec 2011 On 7th December Poltrona Frau Group inaugurated its largest multi-brand showroom in Miami, the result of a collaboration with Poltrona Frau Group Miami and Giampiero di Persia, the Group’s partner for over 10 years. Poltrona Frau has been present in Miami’s Design District since 2001; Cappellini since 2009. Thanks to this key partnership, the Group opened an extraordinary showroom in December 2011; over 2500 m2 on two floors, striking geometry, bold colours, extremely squared: absolutely avant-garde and with an exceptional roof garden. The first floor is devoted to the iconic products of Cassina and Cappellini, plus a bookstore with books on design and architecture. The second floor displays Poltrona Frau products, while pieces by Nemo are strategically distributed to create atmospheric lighting in all of the spaces. Cappellini’s outdoor pieces will be displayed on the terrace.

7 Nov 2011 Broached Commissions, the first significant Australian installation of limited edition design furniture, lighting & objects, launched in Sydney last week. The annual selling exhibition steered by Lou Weis, in partnership with Euroluce co-owner Vincent Aiello, invited Australian designers Trent Janson, Adam Goodrum, Chen Lu and Charles Wilson, along with installation artist Lucy McRae, and Brit Max Lamb, to respond to the curatorial brief set by John McPhee – each work exploring the applied arts in a specific part of Colonial Australian history. .................................................................................... BIRDSMOUTH TABLE, Adam Goodrum ![]() The Birdsmouth Table both functional and symbolic, incorporating a central tool of empire, the mast, into a beautiful jewellery-like element that punctuates the Chippendale inspired tabletop at each of the leg standing points. The table has eight legs, each with a brass castor, and six drawers lined with kangaroo skin. The Wenge and blockwood table top is intersected with primary coloured Marblo leg detailing that features on the table top, and spans 2270 mm. Goodrum has furniture in the collections of leading Italian design brands, among them Cappellini, Poltrona Frau and Bonacina, and has previously exhibited edition work at a design gallery in Paris. ![]() .................................................................................... THE BRIGGS FAMILY TEA SET, Trent Jansen ![]() The Briggs Family Tea Service represents the marriage of George Briggs, a free settler to Tasmania, to Woretermoeteyenner of the Pairrebeenne people, and the four children they had together. The tea service brings together the materials common for water holding to each culture: porcelain in Britain and bull kelp in Tasmania, representing the beginnings of a hybrid culture. Combining slip cast porcelain, swathed in bull kelp and wallaby pelt, and decorated in copper and brass, the result of a collaboration with a porcelain artist. Jansen launched his career with a coveted internship with Marcel Wanders at MOOOI, and last year won a three month internship in Italy at EDRA, mentored by Massimo Morozzi. ![]() .................................................................................... PRICKLY LIGHT, Lucy McRae ![]() ![]() Applying the adaptive reuse capabilities that have made McRae’s work as a ‘body architect’ famous, to create a light, the work adds a protective skin to a floor light, transforming it into a new creature capable of intense labour and self-preservation – two qualities essential for women wanting to survive the harsh conditions common during the Australian colonial period. This is first object designed by McCrae, an installation artist currently based in Europe. ![]() .................................................................................... TALL BOY, Charles Wilson ![]() Superbly crafted, Tall Boy unites a range of colonial period references into a traditional furniture piece, stylistically referencing works from the late seventeenth century. The seven drawer Tall Boy brings together a love for the makeshift agricultural structures of rural Australia, the slender lines of Biedermeier furniture and the simplicity of obelisks to create a unique object. Joins and legs are made from handcrafted Blackwood and the cabinet is finished with French Polish. ![]() Images (c) Scottie Cameron.

31 Oct 2011 Designer: Achille Castiglioni Design year: 1940 Production year: 1968 Typology: trestle worktable Structure: naturally evaporated beech wood Top: plated in white laminate or tempered plate glass Plus: adjustable height Measurements: trestle 51x86cm; h.63/89cm; top 100x200cm Museums: Victoria&Albert Museum, London; Museo dell’arredo contemporaneo, Russi (RA); Thessaloniki Design Museum, Saloniki History: Developed from the type of worktable that is timeless, and was much loved by Achille Castiglioni who wanted to create one for his studio in Piazza Castello in Milan. With Zanotta, Achille Castiglioni perfected a calibrated version of the table for industrial design use, highly accurate both in shape detail and finish. Leonardo is one of Zanotta’s historical products that has become an established international reference piece. Values: Leonardo represents the first industrial re-elaboration of the classic artist’s trestle table, and has had enormous success amongst professionals and industrial employees. It’s adjustable thanks to two simple wooden pegs, which create five different heights from 65cm to 91cm; the trestle legs are composed of 6 elements in evaporated beech wood, assembled to form a small piece of domestic architecture; the top, ample and resistant, is in tempered plate glass or plywood covered with white laminate plastic, two rubber supports stabilize the trestles. ![]()

24 Oct 2011 The visionary words of designer Barbara Barry: Call me a dreamer, but I would like to believe that over the next 25 years we will all continue to grow as human beings and come to a place of understanding that our choices affect everyone. Perhaps we'll reach a collective understanding that the world is a fragile place and that it takes a higher level of care than we currently give it. I see us moving beyond the mere material and toward the restorative, a move that brings us to a way of living that is not all about "stuff" or "style" but about shelter and nurture. I have a great hope that there will be better low-income housing, so that everyone — those with little and those with much — can come home to calm, nurturing, restorative havens. Why should only the wealthy get the opportunity to have what all of us need? I imagine the collective consciousness being raised aesthetically, so that we begin building homes with materials that last: stone basements and walls, solid wood floors — materials that endure beyond us. And finally, I envision more people experiencing the feeling of how something done well feeds our soul. That, in turn, brings us to the realization that we need less. And that leads to an appreciation of the beauty in simple things — things that exist freely in our world like lemons growing on a tree, air that is fresh and the color of the sky. ![]()
